Košice is home to an epic gallery full of massive paintings that stretch up to the sky. It is called Open Mural Gallery (OMG) and it is a unique urban art collection of 30 murals. OMG beautifies facades of socialist residential buildings and exhibits artworks by internationally acknowledged artists from more than ten countries, including Slovakia.
The gallery also includes a work by Polish artist Mariusz Waras, better known as M-City. He is known for large-scale stencils murals inspired by impressions from his childhood in an industrial area. He is the winner of the 2013 award for the best street art piece.
Artworks exhibited can be found throughout the entire city and they are a free aesthetic experience for anyone who happens to be passing by. It is the result of the work of Street Art Communication or SAC, an art platform and civic association led by artist Viktor Feher. Over the past years, he organized many events that attracted local and international artists who painted murals that we can admire today. If you are interested, they can create a personalized tour of these murals for you.
The main goal of the gallery is to increase the aesthetic value of public space which would naturally lead to the reduction of visual smog and raise cultural awareness. Košice is currently the only city in Slovakia with such a specific project.
